Water beads

Along with their Christmas card this year, my Grammy sent me this little zip lock full of beads.

I had absolutely no idea what they were - but they came with directions to stick into a liter of water.  I figured that there was no way that tiny packet needed a liter of water, so I put them into a little mason jar full of water.

And lo and behold, they began to grow:

Until eventually, I had to dump them into a bigger container because they just kept growing!

These things are actually pretty cool!  Once they've been exposed to water, they swell into these big glassy-type beads that are rather pretty and can be used for decoration.  Anyway, I've never heard of them before now, so I thought I'd share.

Are they jelly like or hard? do you keep them wet?

They're kind of jelly like and you keep wetting them so you can use them over and over!
