Last time I was up at my mom's house, I tried to consolidate everything I had left up there into one big rubbermaid-style bin. It contained all my yearbooks, a few old novels I wanted for the girls when they get bigger (Nancy Drew!), a few keepsakes, and a whole bunch of school work my mom had saved. I tried to go through it all recently because there was so much junk contained in there. This may be pretty boring to some so feel free to skip over, but here are some excerpts:
...from my 4th grade journal...
"3-13-96. The most beautiful thing I have ever seen is my mom. She has dark brown hair. She also has dark brown eyes. She is very pretty. She spends lots of time with us. I love her a lot."
"4-22-96. I went to Shenendoah this weekend. On the first day I bought a ring that I'm wearing now. I will draw a picture of it on the bottom of the page. We stopped at an ATM machine and a man left a card in it. We chased him and he was the mayor of Purcellville. He gave us 5 dollars. We slept over night. Then we climbed Stony Mountain. We left in the morning. It was a good weekend."
I still have that ring!
...from my 5th grade journal...
Prompt: "Would you like to be president?"
Response: "Maybe because there has been no woman president ever yet. I at least hope a woman will become president soon. I think it is unfair that only boys are presidents."
Prompt: "There is no national holiday honoring a woman. What woman would you nominate?"
Response: "I would nominate Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt. She was a nice person and into politics. I would also nominate my mom. She raised me and I love her."
And two decades later, it still hasn't happened!
Prompt: "List five things you want to do when you grow up."
Response: "1. I will be a teacher. 2. I will live in California. 3. I will go to the same college as Taylor. 4. I will go to college for 6-8 years. 5. I will have a cat."
0 for 5 on this one!!
Prompt: Free topic
Response: "Today I am going to my new orthodontist. I am going to meet her and see her office. Her name is Dr. Guleria."
Prompt: Free topic
Response: I am getting braces at 5:00 pm. It will be on Tuesday afternoon. I will get a full set. I will get the colors red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, pink. I will get that in a pattern around my mouth."
And so began my braces saga that lasted from April of 1997 (5th grade) through September of 2000 (9th grade).
...and finally, some poetry from a middle school sampler. I was in 6th grade...
First, what I think was a couple attempts at haikus, but instead of the 5-7-5, I did 5-6-6...not sure why someone didn't correct me! Or what I was thinking..!
A poem about a test that makes no sense. First I'm inside, then I'm laying on a lawn, then snow is falling, then I'm back inside...
One about walls talking (Simpson was the name of my school)
A couple sad ones...
And some free form...
I am already looking forward to seeing what Eleanor comes up with when she starts school soon!

A) The one about mom is so sweet. B) I got a similar ring with you in Shenendoah, I remember those! C) Eleanor Roosevelt never became president, but maybe Eleanor Stratton will. D) Dying over the 5 things you want to do when you grow up! But hey, you did substitute teach, you did end up going back to school after W&M, and your sister lives in California so... 1.5 out of 5? E) Lastly, you were awesome at poetry! I would love some current ones :)
