Skills

This week went by in a bit of a blur. It was "skills" week, so we learned lots of new things very quickly. Some skills I learned this week, among others: taking vital signs (please tell me when I will ever need to take a manual blood pressure these days), IV starts, blood draws, placing NG tubes, hanging IV bags/meds, and how to safely move patients (those that need help moving). Obviously I'm not yet very skilled at these new tasks, but I'm sure I'll have plenty of time to practice.

I also got the chance to catch up with a friend in Richmond that I haven't seen in awhile, which was a lot of fun :) We are heading out today to enjoy Memorial Day weekend - enjoy the holiday!

yay, you already know how to do lots more than me!! Nurses are hardly ever asked to do manual BP's but they are way more accurate--I spend lots of my time re-checking :) Let me know if you want to practice this weekend--I have supplies!

I've only seen nurses do a manual bp in MD offices for check ups and then not always. Never in hospital. Good skill to know I guess. I remember spending a week just learning how to make a proper bed and wash my hands! Thank goodness that's not so time consuming anymore.

Hey Katie, I take Manual BP's ALL the time! And on every one of my patients... They are seeing me for something totally unrelated to heart disease, but I never miss a chance to screen... Sounds like you are moving full steam ahead! Good for you! Love, Aunt Michele
