Spring Break - New River Gorge National Park

For spring break this year we did another National Park tour because Jane is in 4th grade and got the National Park Pass through the Every Kid Outdoors program.

We woke up early Saturday morning and hit the road for New River Gorge NP in West Virginia. We started out with a couple overlooks on the way to our first hike. Total miles hiked in this park: 8.75.

Sandstone Falls Overlook:

Brooks Overlook:

Ben sneezed right when we were taking the picture!

Then we went on our first hike around the Sandstone Falls boardwalks:

Then we headed to Grandview and hiked the Castle Rock Trail and Grandview Rim Trail Loop.

At one point Jane started getting a little tired.

Grandview:

We found a playground for the littles to stop at.

Then we headed out on one more short hike/walk to Turkey Spur Overlook:

We called it quits for the night and headed out of the park. We had a little AirBnB in West Virginia complete with chickens. When we got in that evening, we played football in the yard with the chickens until it got dark!

The next morning we woke up with more energy to explore some more.

Our first hike was Longpoint Trail - the first part of which was quite wet!

We got to see the famous bridge on the welcome to West Virginia signs - the longest single span arch bridge in the western hemisphere.

We saw some interesting creatures on this trail.

Then we headed out on the Endless Wall Trail:

Ben washing his hands in the creek:

Diamond Point:

The Endless Wall:

The view at the point had become so foggy and it began to rain, so we called it quits and hit the road to Kentucky!

We stopped at West 6th Brewing for dinner in Lexington and then continued on. It rained and we saw a lot of flooding on the way. Entire exit ramps were under water with just barely the top of a stop sign sticking up. I had never seen flooding like that before.
