Serve the City

Yesterday Chris and I spent the day volunteering in our town. Our church put together a day called Serve the City for everyone to sign up to volunteer and over 100 of us went to Avalon to cut down trees, build and stain fences, paint a playground, garden, paint bedrooms, power wash, and do a ton of other projects. It was a lot of work and we came home very tired and dirty, but the place looked amazing and it was totally worth it.

The truly amazing thing, though, was that close to 800 other people also signed up to volunteer at 75 other organizations, community centers, and private homes across the city. All together there were around 875 people volunteering throughout our community yesterday doing and paying for people's laundry at the laundromat, repairing and washing cars for free, providing food, cleaning, gardening, helping people move, visiting with people, and just giving time, energy, and talents to others...essentially coming together to "love thy neighbor."

It was a great day and we were very glad to be a part of it. We had great weather for it, as well, and are thankful for the rain all day today so we can sit inside being lazy and not feel bad about it ;)
