Jane is two and a half

Jane is two and a half years old now. We have found that we really lucked out with Eleanor during the twos. Jane definitely has the terrible twos and Eleanor never did. We are hoping that her threes will be easier than Eleanor's, though. Jane can throw a tantrum like nobody's business. She goes from super happy and cheerful to complete meltdown in no time at all. Her smile is contagious, though. Our terrible two problem stems from the fact that Jane is not motivated by anything. If I want her to do something (for example: "Stop laying on top of the baby," or "Don't jump on the couch.") we generally try to give a consequence if the behavior continues (such as no treat after dinner, or not getting to wear a dress). This worked well with our first-born, but Jane doesn't care. She just says, "Okay, I don't want a treat." It makes it impossible to get her to do anything! She knows how to use the potty but will not potty train, stating, "I don't want to." She is testing boundaries and there are no consequences that she cares about for her actions. She is so hard! Jane is also so sweet though, so it's hard to stay mad at her. She redeems herself by being cute. She still loves to dance, especially wearing a leotard, and is loving singing, too. Jane is learning how to pedal on her tricycle and scoot on her scooter. She asks "why?" all the time and loves to imitate her sister. She loves her new, younger siblings but is anything but gentle. She doesn't understand her strength or their smallness, but typically at least the thought behind her interactions is kind. She sleeps for about 11 hours every night, and she would still nap every day, but occasionally misses a few because she plays with Eleanor instead since they share a room now. When we really need her to nap, we move her back to the crib in her old room to nap. We have decided to put her in preschool next year because she is getting bored at home now that I am often distracted by the babies.

Her smile does melt the frustration. Hang in there mommy! She will be 3 in 6 months!
